Frustrating - but looks nice
- I ordered the Android 10 head unit for my 2005 CLK 500 in late November. I paid extra for “express shipping,” but still had to wait 15 days for it to arrive.
The unit arrived without any instructions. Thank goodness for Marco Cerqueira’s YouTube videos. He installed basically the same head unit in a car very similar to mine and even produced a wiring diagram to show what extra connections needed to be made in order to get this unit working.
It fits perfectly in 2 of the three dimensions – width and height. As for getting the unit to seat properly in the dash – be prepared to spend a lot of time mushing all of the wiring and adapter boxes back inside.
The fiber optic box I was sent was for an SLK and not a CLK. Either that or it just didn’t work. I ended up ordering a replacement from another company thinking I might get it sooner, since my center console was pretty much disassembled in order to get the original radio out. (At least I feel confident the new radio can’t be easily stolen…) You will also need a fiber optic bypass if you plan on removing the CD changer from your glove box (if you have one) since it’s also on the fiber network.
Doesn’t matter if you have the meta data saved with your music files. The music widget displays the file name – complete with “.mp3.” Looks amateur. Like most radios, you find a favorite station and press and hold one of the pre-set buttons to save it. If the station is running RDS, your button may end up showing the artist or song being played at that moment. Wait for the more generic station ID to show up and then quickly press a button before another song starts up.
The last two head units I used were from ATOTO. ATOTO has some very nice features that I miss on this unit. You can edit radio station buttons to say whatever you want – as opposed to whatever the station calls itself. Then there’s its 2-second startup. The unit sits in stand-by mode so when you start up the car it’s instantly on, as opposed to waiting close to 30 seconds for the Seicane to kick in. There is a setting on the Seicane unit where you can delay shut-down for up to an hour, so if you pop into a store for a few minutes you get tunes very quickly when you return. Next morning, you wait.
Possibly most aggravating is the inability to customize the home screen. The whole point of having an Android system is the ability to make it look the way you want. The default screen isn’t bad – some buttons, a clock and music widget. You can’t edit the buttons. So, you have a “navigation” button even though there’s a hardware “Navigation” button on the side of the unit. I’ve installed Car Launcher Pro and am trying to get it closer to what I want. It has a Google voice button available that lets me initiate phone calls without having to tap a phone number into the Seicane Bluetooth screen. I guess it’s a matter of what you’re willing to put up with to get something else.
